Face recognition by app captures 42 fugitives at Salvador Carnival

After the first successful experience of using face recognition at Carnival 2019, resulting in the capture of a fugitive criminal, the Secretariat of Public Security of Bahia (SSP-BA) repeated the use of this technology to identify fugitives from justice at Carnival 2020, apprehending 42 (forty-two) individuals. The face recognition system also managed to measure, more accurately, the total number of people present at the Salvador Carnival.

Along with a human identification process, face recognition was also authenticated using the Face Check app, installed on police officers smartphones. The app, still in the testing phase, enabled the verification of citizens identity through face photography or fingerprints, relating the images captured by the police officer to the IIPM (Pedro Mello Identification Institute) database, which is part of the Technical Police Department of SSP-BA.
