Google is fined for breach of European Union’s antitrust rules


European Union’s antitrust rules. According to the European Commission, Google imposed unlawful restrictions on device manufacturers and operators of mobile networks to consolidate its dominant position as Internet search engine. In particular, Google:

  • has required manufacturers to pre-install the Google Search app and browser app (Chrome), as a condition for licensing Googles app store (the Play Store)
  • made payments to certain large manufacturers and mobile network operators on condition that they exclusively pre-installed the Google Search app on their devices; and
  • prevented manufacturers that would like to pre-install Google’s proprietary applications from using versions of Android operational system not approved by Google (known as “Android Forks”)
