Azevedo Sette Advogados has hired a former associate from Mattos Filho, Veiga Filho, Marrey Jr e Quiroga Advogados as a partner to boost its insurance practice.

The firm announced Jaqueline Suryan’s hire on 12 April. Azevedo Sette now counts 34 partners.

Suryan, 31, will devote her time to Azevedo Sette’s insurance, pension planning and healthcare practices.

Before joining Azevedo Sette, Suryan was an associate at Mattos Filho between 2012 and 2018. Mattos Filho managing partner José Eduardo Carneiro Queiroz says Suryan left on good terms and praises her strong work ethic. “Jaqueline Suryan has been devoted to her work at Mattos Filho for many years, contributing a lot to the firm, and we are happy for her new position at Azevedo Sette,” he says.

On Suryan’s hire, Azevedo Sette managing partner Luis Sette says her expertise will help bolster one of the firm’s key practice areas. “Jaqueline has extensive experience in insurance, especially in regulatory and administrative matters,” he says. “We are delighted with our new partner as the insurance department is considered an important element at Azevedo Sette.”

Azevedo Sette, which began life as a small, mining-focused office in Belo Horizonte, is now among the larger firms by headcount in the Brazilian market. It is especially well known for its corporate and mining advice and boasts big-name clients, including Microsoft, Mercedes Benz and Brazil’s Grupo Pão de Açúcar.

This is not the first lawyer Azevedo Sette has poached from another Brazilian firm this year. In February, it hired real estate lawyer Bruno Costa from Machado Meyer Advogados. However, there have also been departures. Last month, Demarest Advogados recruited a former corporate partner from Azevedo to boost its wealth management and family succession offering.
