Anatel holds a public hearing to discuss reduction of Internet of Things (IoT) barriers

The National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel) held a public hearing at its headquarters to discuss the possibility of reducing regulatory barriers regarding the expansion of Internet of Things – IoT apps (machine to machine communication) in Brazil – related to quality rules, licensing, service, among other things – in order to dismiss a specific IoT destination. The Anatel advisor stressed the new proposal´s compatibility with the National Internet of Things Plan and with the premises of the base-document for the Brazilian 5G networks strategy. The latter is subject to a public consultation of the Science, Technology, Innovations and Communications Ministry (MCTIC), particularly as regards to discussions on tax barriers.

The reevaluation of regulatory barriers regarding IoT application is also object of Public Consultation No. 39 of August of this year. The Public Consultation identifies eight thematic axes in its Regulatory Impact Analysis in order to systematize the discussion, namely: i) grant; ii) performance rules; iii) taxation; iv) licensing; v) numbering; vi) conformity assessment; vii) spectrum; and viii) infrastructure and inputs.
